FreeThinkUS Is now preparing to bring the Battle to each State as well.
Shortly, we will be sponsoring Petitions in each State.
As each Petition comes online, we will be seeking a "Petition Caretaker" from each State. We ask those Caretakers to only spread the word that there is now a "Rally Point" of YOUR OWN, to make Citizens Voices Heard!

FreeThinkUS was created so the unheard can be heard. We will build the Canvas. It is up to YOU, The US Citizen to paint it with your thoughts. Please bear with us.

FTUS is "Blue Collar Founded"

All should be reminded that, It is The Cause, that is Serious.

Any and all endeavors, great and small are moving towards the same Goal. The more voices brought out, however they are reached, the better we are heard and can push to stop those who choose to “giveaway” this Country and what it means to be American.

We here at FreeThinkUS welcome all.

Democrat, Republican and Independent. We all have our own wants and ways but we must throw our differences aside and rally behind this One Cause.

Let yourself be heard and counted!

WE THE PEOPLE ...

The common citizens from around this Great Nation and now here in Massachusetts, have a problem.
Our Governor Patrick wants to give Illegal Aliens matching rights to US Citizens.

With no racism or animosity, we invite your opinions on this subject to Petition our politicians against this great wrong.
We also invite your opinion on illegal immigration as a whole. How have you been effected? We do welcome both sides of the issue. Not from Massachusetts?
Your opinion as an American Citizen is still welcome.

We here are also curious about your feelings on the H1B Visa program. With our economy in this unstable state, we do not condone bringing in those from another country to replace American Workers, especially when they are replaced for less pay. We are pushing to make E-Verify mandatory as well.

Let yourselves be heard!

  1. Welcome,
This is no place for bad behavior. We are just here to get our country and economy back on track. As a Blue Collar worker, I have been adversly affected by cheap illegal labor for a long time. This is not against any race or class. They need to be sent home and apply legally. Then they would be welcome. We cannot afford to give any benefits to any illegals. We must speak up against this unimaginal behavior by our politicians. Please share your thoughts

  2. Hello, everyone! As a legal, taxpaying citizen of Massachusetts, I can't express how encouraged I am by the emergence of this grassroots group whose voice will grow and be heard by our legislators. The days of being smothered by one advocacy group or another can be over as we become our own advocates! I'm looking forward to discussing this and other issues affecting us, our families, and our neighbors. If, in the process, we're able to contribute something tangible toward ending the insanity that has been Massachusetts for far too long, this will be a journey worth taking.

  3. Deval Patrick's "New American Agenda" contains 131 proposals, many of which are designed to benefit illegal aliens. I believe the agenda is missing a few key items that would greatly benefit citizens and legal immigrants who are tired of Governor Patrick and President Obama redistributing our assets to illegal aliens who have no respect for this country or its citizens:

    1) End birthright citizenship (H.R. 1868 introduced by Rep. Nathan Deal, R-Ga.to amend section 301 of the Immigration and Nationality Act )

    2) Overturn 1982 Supreme Court Ruling (Plyler vs. Doe) which mandates illegal aliens receive free K-12 public school education

    3) Require all employers to use E-Verify

    4) Implement the 287(g) program across all local police departments so illegal aliens can be identified and expelled

    5) End all public services and benefits to illegal aliens

    6) Stop the abuse of Emergency Rooms by illegals (EMTALA was never designed to give illegals free health care). The hospital's only obligation is to stabilize the patient in an emergency situation. They should not be treating non life threatening conditions.

    7) Stop wasting our court’s time with ridiculous immigration hearings / appeals at the taxpayers expense. If you cannot furnish proof that you are here legally, you should be be on the first bus, boat or plane back to your own country.

  4. I could not agree with you more, Deece. Deval Patrick's "New American Agenda" is an outrageously cumbersome entitlement package that doesn't do much, if anything, to benefit actual Americans ... i.e., citizens and LEGAL immigrants. If you don't have time to read, word for word, the 145 page document, the summary at the end pretty much tells it all. It's titled "Top 12 Issues Raised at Public Meetings". They are:

    1. Access to driver’s licenses (raised at all of the public meetings)
    2. Access to in-state tuition for all immigrant residents (raised at all of the public meetings)
    3. More ESOL classes, and lower cost for classes
    4. Increased funding for translation and interpreter service in schools
    5. Allowing bilingual education
    6. Better access and information on state colleges including better information about, and access to, college scholarships
    7. Improving accessibility of recertification agencies for foreign professional degrees
    8. Need for translators available at all health centers
    9. Cost of naturalization prohibitive particularly for families with multiple members applying
    10. More affordable and/or subsidized housing
    11. State Agencies need greater multilingual support staff to address demand
    12. Assistance with housing applications

Were you consulted about any of this? I wasn't.

Detractors to our opposition to this deceptive betrayal of all Massachusetts taxpayers accuse us of "prejudice" and "diversity intolerance". Not so. Sounds an awful lot like the pot calling the kettle, dare I say, black.

The first wave of immigrants were the Portugese, than the spanish, than the english, than the french, than the dutch than the germans, than the chineses, than the irishs, than the italians, than the jews, etc, etc. You may as well get use to it just like the original Americans did. 7. Refering to Dan the Plumber's comment. The discovery of North America by non-residents dates back further with visits from the Vikings and ruins have been found in the New England area pointing to visits by the original Knights Templar. Immigration was never a problem for this land mass, then Colonies, then States until the 1980's and 1990's. Now our Citizens and Services are being overwhelmed by persons that choose to enter and take what they can under the cover of night. We would not allow this in our individual homes so, why would we allow this in our towns, cities, states and country as a whole. We are a nation of laws and rules. These laws and rules were voted on " By The People. If we cannot provide for " The People " first, and we aren't, then why should we provide for those that do not respect our laws. As Dan has mentioned the " Original Americans " That is one great shame on all that can call themselves American Citizens. We all assume that our Government provides for them and it doesn't. This is just another shining reason that we need to band together and take care of All American Citizens first. Jobs, Food, Shelter and real healthcare, not this Bul&*it that Congress is forcing on us. We have all just witnessed our supposed Reps hand out billions upon billions to business' that that pay sh7t for taxes compared to the percentage paid by the average Joe/Jill. Now, Gov. Patrick and his cronies want to give away Our tax dollars to illegals. None of our representatives are working for the US Citizen. They ignore our votes on term limits and have created great political machines to thwart US. If we do not shout " Enough Is Enough! " We are doomed as a " Nation of The People, By The People and For The People. " This site has taken on the " Battle Against Illegal Immigration " This "Battle" directly effects all of US. I will hear anyone on the matter. Prove to me that a US Citizen deserves less than a border jumper.

  8. RE: Dan's (can I please call you Dan? :) original post ..... I'm not sure if I disagree with you, Dan, because I'm not sure I understand the meaning of much of your post. If you're comparing legal immigrants, who came, and are still coming, to America's shores seeking a better life with the illegal immigrants we object to, then I do not agree. Our ancestors, and those who come here today, who obey our laws, contribute to the sustainability and continual betterment of our society, and become Americans in every context, have always been accepted and welcomed. Illegal immigrants who come to America to be anything but Americans, and take everything while giving nothing, having no regard whatsoever for the people they aim to be one of, are horses of a different color. I am vehemently opposed to ILLEGAL (not so-called "undocumented" aliens .... they are illegal, law breakers) immigrants, and funding their continued stay. Concerning Native Americans, No question they were here first. But somebody was somewhere first throughout history. They lost the battle for this nation hundereds of years ago, and make no mistake .... they fought a gruesome battle. It was war. Not everyone wins and they didn't win. Right, wrong or indifferent, that's what happened. Reparation, redistribution of wealth and power and the like are nothing but long, four-letter words. It's ludicrous for anyone (Indians, illegals, whomever) to expect a prize for losing.

    Advocates push immigrant English classes
Immigrant advocates are helping Brockton business and community leaders
Apply for new grants to create English classes for immigrants. Brockton
officials and advocates are slated to speak today on the new grants.
Earlier this month, state officials announced $ 1.3 million in grants from
The Obama administration stimulus package for English classes. Around 17,000 immigrants in Massachusetts are on waiting lists for English classes. The grants come after Governor Deval Patrick announced last week that his Cabinet is studying recommendations from an immigrant advisory panel.

It is my personal opinion that an immigrant advisory panel should not be mixing Legal with Illegal. The Stimulus package is supposed to generate real jobs for the legal citizens of MA. and all states. Not the crazy agenda of those openly recruiting illegals. I am tired of the word Immigrant being bandied about trying to hide all the fervor with illegals. This is truly starting to resemble the twisted society in a great book called “1984” ThoughtPolice anyone? Read the Book.

  11. From The FAIR WEBSITE:

Massachusetts Governor Pushes for Driver’s Licenses and Tuition Breaks for Illegal Aliens
Last week Governor Deval Patrick unveiled a state-commissioned report that recommends driver’s licenses and in-state tuition for illegal aliens in Massachusetts. (The Boston Globe, November 17, 2009). The 56-page report, known as the New Americans Agenda, includes 131 recommendations for integrating immigrants into economic and civic life in Massachusetts. (See New Americans Agenda). However, the Agenda is not limited to helping immigrants who cross our borders legally, but specifically advocates for measures that will benefit illegal aliens and undermine our immigration laws.

The Agenda was created by the Governor’s Advisory Council for Refugees and Immigrants, and makes no effort to distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants, who are seemingly all “New Americans.” (See New Americans Agenda). The 131 recommendations include providing more English classes for immigrants and training public school teachers to teach immigration lessons. Daily News Tribune, November 19, 2009). The Agenda also suggests expanding financial aid and in-state tuition at state colleges and universities to all immigrants, regardless of legal status. (See New Americans Agenda). As to the recommendation that illegal aliens should be allowed to obtain driver’s licenses, the authors acknowledge that the federal REAL ID Act is a barrier and advocate for efforts to repeal the statute. (The Boston Globe, November 17, 2009; New Americans Agenda). Despite the hurdle of repealing a federal law, the Agenda adamantly argues that licenses should be given to illegal aliens. There is no suggestion that existing immigration laws be enforced.

The Advisory Council’s proposals have already faced criticism from lawmakers and activists in Massachusetts. Senate Minority Leader Richard Tisei called the report outrageous, and Senator Scott Brown, who is running for U.S. Senate, responded that “Government should strictly enforce the law, not ignore it with a wink and a nod, or even worse, pass laws that condone illegal behavior.” (Boston Herald, November 18, 2009; Daily News Tribune, November 19, 2009). Other opponents to the proposals argue that illegal aliens should not receive the same benefits as legal residents, and many Massachusetts residents remain resistant to granting in-state tuition or driver’s licenses to undocumented residents. (The Boston Globe, November 15, 2009). Although a bill to provide lower tuition rates to illegal aliens failed in 2006, last week Governor Patrick publicly renewed his support for legislation extending in-state tuition rates to illegal aliens. This prompted the state Republican Party to issue a statement criticizing the administration’s position. (Boston Herald, November 17, 2009).

Clearly an advocacy document, the New Americans Agenda urges the state to push for comprehensive immigration reform at the federal level with suggestions more akin to finger-pointing than legislative proposals. The authors allege, “These anti-immigrant voices have created a poisonous atmosphere around the immigration debate and unfortunately have often overwhelmed legitimate public discussion on flow, status and the best way to incorporate newcomers.” (See New Americans Agenda).

Patrick called the report a “values statement” and has not specifically endorsed any of the recommendations. (O Journal, November 20, 2009). Instead, he has given his cabinet 90 days to draft a plan to improve the lives of all immigrants in Massachusetts, who will benefit whether they are lawfully present in this country or not. (The Boston Globe, November 17, 2009).

  12. Hi Cougar
The Native Americans were wronged and I am OK with the winner of the war writing there version of history as fact. Immigrants are becoming the majority very quickly. We live in a majority rule soceity. If we did not murder the next American generation by abortion... we as a culture would not be here with this immigrant problem. Some people think it is OK for the immigrants to do all the low paying jobs. But they get upset when they take their high paying jobs. If you really believe in Immigrants don't belong here that do not hire them. Do not go to restaurants that hire them. If they were not being paid they would not be here. I know in my trade most plumbers will not hire them because they are smart enough to know they WILL TAKE YOUR JOB.

  13. Hi Dan,
I have a question. You seem to be linking your choice of word "immigrant" to illegal and legal immigrants. "Blurring the line" so to speak. Immigrants that come here legally,(FROM ANY COUNTRY) follow the rules, properly apply for citzenship, learn English because they are proud to be a part of The United states are a great asset. As were my parents.
Illegal immigrants start with breaking the law by jumping our borders or purposely over staying their Visa and disappearing. Many then continue lawbreaking by forging fake or worse, stealing actual identities. E-Verify is a simple and acurate system THAT SHOULD BE MADE MANDATORY by law so the ILLEGALS will find no reason to stay here. I really request that you define your use of the word "immigrant" Thanks. We look forward to more of your input.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hey, Dan! I'm truly thrilled to see you back. The debate you inspire is exactly what we're all about. I do agree with Moose64 about the importance of defining "immigrant". There is a substantive difference between legal and illegal immigrants. I oppose illegal immigrants and our government's apparent intention to give away the farm to them. Our goal is to do what we can to stop the Deval Patricks and Barack Obamas from selling the actual citizens out.

    ReplyDelete
  16. PBKingman, welcome! I think you couldn't be more right! Our elected officials are NOT working for us, and there's no doubt in my mind that we have to speak up and let them know that's not acceptable to many of the taxpayers who foot the bill for their nonsense. Our planned petition to Patrick is a good first step toward conveying this to him in no uncertain terms.

  17. Hi John/Moose You are right and thanks for the correction. I use the word Immigrants...I was refering to illegal immigrants as the problem...there still is a huge illegal Irish, and Chinese Immigrant problem in Boston. ...most people think of illegal immigrants as the brazilians only. They all take our jobs and do not pay taxes. Dan The Plumber

    ReplyDelete
  18. Dan, many people do think of illegal immigrants as Hispanic or specifically, Brailian and there's a reason for that. They are the illegals who have advocacy groups, push the government for entitlements they are NOT entitled to and, therefore get all the press.

In my younger days, I knew several Irish illegals well . They got here by sneaking over the Canadian border, and being far less politically aware back then, I considered them friends. The difference between them and the current day, high profile illegals is exactly that .... they were not high profile. They remained under the radar, as you would expect lawbreakers to do, and asked for (let alone, demanded) nothing by way of "entitlements". They worked (in the trades, like you) and took care of themselves and their families. Don't misunderstand me, please. I get it now (I didn't back then) that they essentially stole jobs and money from legal Americans and that was wrong. But my point is that although equally illegal as the Brazilians and Hispanics in the forefront of todays debate, they had a different impact on our society overall. Before they became legal, taxpaying citizens of the U.S., they hid like the illegals they were. They didn't hold public forums and conventions or petition the government with lists of demands. It's all just so askewed now, and it's our government that not only allows but encourages the lunacy.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Greetings Free Thinkers,
This has been an ongoing battle which seems to only get more complicated as everyone puts their hands in this cookie jar of affairs. Besides the obvious reason that concessions are being made because illegals provide the cheap labor that large corporations need to increase their profit margin... is this the true driving force for advocacy of illegals, or is there something even more insidious? We know that the more benefits illegals receive, the more we blue collar workers suffer. We also know that there are huge obstacles to overcoming this... A large part of our beloved USA is now owned by a very small group of foreign interests who don't really care where we get our labor, all they want is to own a piece of the pie, be entertained, and profit. Large corporations here at home routinely pay off politicians to allow benefits for illegals to continue because it increases their profit margin at the office, after which their executives go right home and pay cash under the table for illegals to do their domestic work, again to increase their own personal savings and avoid paying taxes. This isn't meant to bash anyone... it's just reality, so it seems the fault is as much our own for not fighting back as it is theirs for helping illegals prosper. With money as the end game, in such a greedy and instant-gratification-obsessed society, how do we stop this momentum and impress upon the powers that be the importance of the legal American worker? Some propose that we are going back towards an oppressive Imperialist society much like the one our forefathers came here to get away from. The class separation is indeed getting more pronounced, but I still believe the middle class has a voice... with the power of information and instant communication at our fingertips, how can we not be able to make a difference? The answer may lie at the heart of our political system, which has been antiquated for some time (how long has it been since the US has been a true democracy? Capitalism and democracy don't mix very well for long periods, historically). Unless we are prepared to fight another Revolution, which we are not armed or organized enough to do, progress will be slow in breaking through the red tape of American beaurocracy on this matter. Another obstacle that is entirely out of our control is the fact that illegals are coming here because there is no Cuban, Puerto Rican, or Mexican "Dream". Circumstances in the countries they are coming from are not good... I remember a show on Discovery many years ago, an interview with an illegal who had crossed the border and been deported 6 times as of the time of filming. This illegal said very matter of factly "It doesn't matter how many times they catch me, I will keep coming back until I find a way to stay." The reporter asked him why he would do this, and the illegal replied "Because there is no future for me in my country, nothing except poverty". I'd love to hear some thoughts on this...

Immigration policy needs to be resolved on a federal level, and the nation's estimated 12 million illegal immigrants need "a path to citizenship," Attorney General Martha Coakley said yesterday.
"We need a policy that makes sense for 12 million people who are stuck in a purgatorial status quo," said Coakley, one of four Democrats hoping to fill the late Ted Kennedy's Senate seat. "It doesn't do us any good to do nothing."
A distinction should be made between hardened criminals here illegally and those whose only crime is immigrating without going through proper channels, she said, though, "I think there have to be some penalties involved" for those who have broken the law in coming into the country illegally.
Violent criminals and drug dealers should be deported, but the federal government "doesn't have either the detention centers or the ability to deport" every person in this country who is here illegally, she said.
"As attorney general, I have gone after the companies that have exploited workers," and getting employers to pay fair wages helps American citizens compete in the marketplace as well, she said.
Coakley is running against U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano, D-8th, City Year co-founder Alan Khazei and Boston Celtics co-owner Stephen Pagliuca in the Dec. 8 Democratic primary. The winner will face state Sen. Scott Brown, R-Wrentham, or Republican businessman Jack E. Robinson in a January special election.

  24. First of all I would like to say thanks for the invite from Cougar to venture over here.

As for illegal aliens, I do not share any of the candidates views on "a path to citizenship". All illegal aliens and their children must be returned to their native homeland and enter the country according to the law, with a life or death situation being the only exception and thoroughly scrutinized. This "ah, what the hell..." attitude is a major reason our Country is in the shape it is. Rules are not meant to be broken. Rules are put in place to insure the peaceful co-existence of all things. Anyone who believes it is OK to put aside the rules as a means to an end, should themselves be "put aside" and replaced with someone who will uphold the laws as they were written, and meant to be carried out.

  26. Massachusetts Wants to Give ILLEGALS “Right to Vote”

Under fire – Rep. criticized for supporting voting rights for illegals

    By: Lurdes C. da Silva

FRAMINGHAM – Give Massachusetts’s undocumented residents the right to vote? Even many immigrant advocates say that should remain illegal.

In recent days, State Rep. Pam Richardson (D-Framingham) has ignited widespread opposition with her idea to give illegal immigrants the right to vote in local elections. To the point she backed down only a day after she said she was in favor of adding the issue to the state Democratic Party’s official platform.

“I have been receiving a lot of e-mails and phone calls… I’d say 90 percent are not in favor of this proposal,” Rep. Richardson told our sister publication MetroWest Daily News. “It’s definitely made me think the whole concept.”
Critics say the right to vote should only be given to U.S. citizens.

I've followed Pam Richardson for a while; with attention specifically to her shameless pandering to the tens of thousands of (known) Brazilian illegals in Framingham (her district). Mrs. Richardson is exactly what's wrong with Massachusetts politics. Make no mistake, she and everyone like her, are interested in the illegals' VOTES above and beyond anything else they claim. It's apalling!

  29. I challenge those who claim illegal aliens only come here to work to check out the below link to a CBS news article & video about women who cross the border and head straight to a US hospital for the sole purpose of dropping an anchor baby. The woman being interviewed acknowledges she has no money to pay for the delivery. When the reporter points out to her that Americans are upset that their taxes have to pay for it, she has the audacity to say she can't see why Americans would resent having to foot the bill.

The article / video clip is an infuriating and disgusting illustration of the arrogance and huge sense of entitlement of these people.

  32. Here are just a few Illegal Immigrant Facts (a snipet from an article under the 'Immigration Issues' tab on the FAIR website at http://www.fairus.org where an almost overwhelming amount of information can be found on this important subject):
    • Between 1989 and 2007, immigrants and their U.S.-born children accounted for 71 percent of the increase in the uninsured.
    • Today, more than one out of every four uninsured U.S. residents is an immigrant.
    • There are 14.5 million immigrants and their U.S.-born children without health insurance, 32 percent of the uninsured.
    • The foreign-born make up 27 percent of the uninsured population in the U.S.
    • 48 percent of immigrants and their children are either uninsured or depend on Medicaid.
    • Approximately 65 percent of illegal aliens in the U.S. are uninsured.
    • In some hospitals, as much as two-thirds of total operating costs are for uncompensated care for illegal aliens.
    • 425,000 births a year in the U.S.—more than 1 in every 10 births—is to an illegal alien mother.
    • Although a national total of annual unreimbursed medical expenses for illegal aliens is not available, it is likely that those costs are more than $10.5 billion.

We should be disturbed but, contrary to the implication of Jorge's preceding comment, not afraid. We CAN and WILL do something about this. Not by spewing hate and abuse but by banding together, the Massachusetts and U.S. CITIZENRY en masse, to take our state and our nation back.

We welcome even your thoughts. By the way, there is no "white trash" only educated and non-educated. Here, we are educated and we enlighten those who are not. Jorge, I call you and those like you Cowards.

Instead you runaway and hide here. That is a Coward. We are not white trash here, nor are we Cowards. Here, we speak loudly and freely to make a better future for our Children and our Country. 35.

  36. CSBarry, I agree with (almost) all you said in your two previous posts. I know it's why I'm working so hard to do what I can to stop the illegal insanity. Those who have no reasonable, valid arguement in support and justification for our government's ludicrous position on the subject, cry that American's hate immigrants. Not so! I disapprove of ILLEGAL aliens, not legal immigrants. There's an important difference. My grandparents came to this country 80 years ago from Ireland, LEGALLY. And even then, they asked for and expected nothing for the privilege of being in America. They contributed to this country and became part of it's legal citizenry, and were proud and grateful for the opportunity to do so. The only exception I take to your last post is this ..... I agree that none of the Democratic candidates offer an acceptable view on the topic of "the path to citzenship". I'm a Scott Brown admirer and am his ardent supporter. I think he's very much opposed to all the giveaways, existing and proposed, to illegal aliens. If you never make your way to http://brownforussenate.com , here's a synopsis of his views (from his website): "Immigration - I recognize that our strength as a nation is built on the immigrant experience in America. I welcome legal immigration to this country. However, we are also a nation of laws and government should not adopt policies that encourage illegal immigration. Providing driver’s licenses and in-state tuition to illegal immigrant families will act as a magnet in drawing more people here in violation of the law and it will impose new costs on taxpayers. I oppose amnesty, and I believe we ought to strengthen our border enforcement and institute an employment verification system with penalties for companies that hire illegal immigrants." Isn't that our view?

I am sorry that "Recent Comments" has been not working. It is a problem with Blogger/Gadget itself. It will return shortly.

STORY: The Salvation Army, The New Grinch!

The Salvation Army has been just accused of Racism because they wished to see some form of ID before handing out toys. The ID was used so the same people could not keep coming back and recieving more free toys.
The illegal alien community and their Lobbying Groups are "outraged" and are "picketing" Salvation Army Centers. They are crying "RACISM" and other false allegations. This story has come out of California. The Salvation Army and Toys for Tots there got hit with an out cry of lies!

I live in Revere, MA a Seudo Santuary City right next store is Chelsea and Lynn. Both are self proclaimed Santuary Cities. I am about to say something Horrible. This is my opinion only.
" I feel that in my area, the illegals should not get anything FREE at all. If you are lined up for Services, whether they are for Jobs, Welfare, Toys, Food or State Aid in any form you should be a Citizen of The United States. I believe that the law that states Babies born in the US are Citizens no matter the parent's status should be REPEALED. It was ther when we were growing to grow. Well, We have grown beyond the capability of assisting our own Citizens. Why should we assist those who do not Follow THE LAW? In my area, if you are a Citizen, down on his or her luck you are screwed because of the overwhelming population of illegals trying for and getting those services as well. I am not a Monster. Charities and Churches can help anyone they want. The problem arises when my tax dollars help NON-CITIZENS and there is not enough to help our own Citizens. You know, the ones that paid into the system or served their country? That was my Opinion."
    What is yours?

  38. A friend and I recently came across a website, listing pages of Massachusetts newspapers with active links to each publication. A handy tool! The disappointing and somewhat alarming revelation was as we searched each individual link for "illegal alien", "illegal immigrant", "undocumented immigrant", "immigrant", and "immigration", we found surprisingly few current articles, editorials, reports and/or related comments. Since the release of the details of Deval Patrick's "New American Agenda" in mid-November, there has been little to no press on the subject. Even the reports from a major Boston news outlet site, on which I know many comments were posted, seem to be now unavailable. At the risk of being viewed a "conspiracy theorist", does this resemble a media blackout to anyone else?

Instead, a Bailout with Trillions of our Dollars to the very companies that lobbied For All The Rules that protected Citizens to Vanish. Aggresive action should have been taken on illegals and those that employ them. E-VERIFY should have been made a LAW. So those jobs could be taken by US CITIZENS. Laws should have been put back in place to protect The Citizens. Instead, we have The Smoke and Mirrors of this Healthcare Debate filling the airwaves. I see truths here not Theories!

  43. Immigrant labor force booming
Mass. report foresees a skill gap
By Yvonne Abraham, Globe Staff | June 19, 2005
The immigrant population in Massachusetts, already at a 50-year high at the end of the last century, has swelled since then and the expansion shows no sign of slowing, according to a report set for release today.
The rise in the state's foreign-born population has continued, despite the slowing of the state's economy since 2000 and tightened entry requirements for foreigners after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
The report, produced by the Massachusetts Institute for a New Commonwealth, a nonpartisan think tank, along with the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University, warns of serious challenges as the immigrants -- many of them with poor English ability and low skill levels -- seek to thrive in the state's increasingly complex job market.

Although I understand that there are allot of illegals in this country I don't really believe they are doing harm to americans employmentwise. I will fully agree they need to be legalized and I don't believe they should be naturalized until they learn the language of the country they reside in. Most illegals do menial jobs that nobody with a college education wants and in Mass I'd guess the majority have such an education.
I am really incensed that our Govt ( by the people?) is giving so many free handouts. I am not against giving a person a leg up to help them get a start...but DANG make them follow the same laws and rules we have to follow.
I'll end there as if I don't this will be 48 paragraphs long.

  45. Welcome BillKist,

Thank You for leaving your comment.

Mr. Kist, do you consider Mechanics who work on Construction Equipment menial? Do you consider Plumbers and their Helpers menial? Do you consider Roofers menial? Do you consider Carpenters menial? Do you consider Construction Laborers menial?
Do you take into account the complete lack of jobs for College or High school students in the summer not a problem?
If someone is blessed with a College Education after all that hard work and knowledge, they should realize that all these jobs have either vanished or due to the low wages accepted by illegals, have become unable to sustain a living wage.
I have a College Education (Engineering) I have worked on Plasma Lasers and Robotics for the SemiConductor Industry here and in China. I am also a Blue Collar Mechanic on Heavy Trucks and Heavy Equipment. I have lived and seen both sides of this invasion.
I cannot believe your first paragraph. I am sorry but, it touches me as Elitest.

  46. BillKist, I am beyond excited to see you here .... welcome! I agree with some of what you're saying but I think I might feel more strongly than you do (not $1.20 strongly, mind you :) about the immigration issue, particularly RE: illegal aliens. It's just broken my tolerance meter, which quite frankly goes on the list of things about them I resent. There was a time not so long ago that I actually admired any immigrant who came to America the right way .... worked hard to build a better life for themselves and their families, and were determned and proud to become real Americans. I'm sure there are still many made from that mold. But so many, even legal immigrants, seem to have their hand out and our government is more than willing to give them OUR money. The illegals are a whole different story. I really don't get it. We have LAWS to deal with them. We just, for reasons that escape me, don't bother to enforce them, and they know it. FreeThinkUS is sponsoring a petition to the Gov. and Legislators on the subject. It would be great if you can make your way there to read it, and if in agreement, sign it. Creators Syndicate – At last week's Job Summit, there was talk of a second stimulus package, of tax credits for small businesses that hire new workers, of an Infrastructure Bank to select national priority pubic works projects like the Hoover Dam and TVA of yesteryear.
But no one, it seems, advanced the one obvious idea that would have the most immediate and dramatic impact — a moratorium on all immigration into the United States.
Unemployment is at 10 percent, near the postwar high of 1983. Fifteen million Americans are out of work. Ten million more have given up looking or are working fewer hours than they would like.

Over a decade ago I went to a play in a small theater. The play was "Under the Bridge" by Arthur Miller.
It was about 2 illegal immigrants from Sicily. The play is written in a way to guide your sympathies, a style of theater I don't much care for.

When the play ended, the director held a discussion. First he asked us 2 questions.

    1. Is there anyone here who was not sympathetic to the illegal immigrants?
I was the only one in the audience who raised his hand.

    2. Is anyone here of Sicilian ancestry?
Again, I was the only one in the audience who raised his hand.

My observation is this: Directing your hatred and frustations towards a certain group of people is easy to do, looking in the the mirror and admitting that the problem lies within is much harder. Is illegal immigration an issue? Yes indeed. Is it worth the time and effort of one individual from Revere MA who is in the construction industry, an industry that exploits illegals everyday, to blog about it? No. You are fighting a losing battle, and you are a very small player in a field of giants. Amnesty will pass and the country will be better off. Then you'll probably wish you hadn't spent hours blogging about it. AMERICA IS A COUNTRY BUILT BY IMMIGRANTS, MANY OF THE IRISH & ITALIAN WHO IMMIGRATED HERE IN THE EARLY 1900'S WERE ILLEGAL. If we continue to give most of the labor type jobs, painting, landscaping, floors, masonary, etc. where are the people who don't go to college going to find a job in this country. When the government gives illegals amnesty and alllows them to bring two of thier family members over our medical system will collapse. More than 6,500 drug-related killings made 2009 the bloodiest year since President Felipe Calderon declared war on the cartels in late 2006 and deployed 45,000 soldiers to fight organized crime, according to death tallies by San Diego's Trans-Border Institute...

    The LA Times January 16,2010

The day after an earthquake plunged Haiti into ruin and despair, the Obama administration suspended the deportation of Haitian illegal immigrants. This was sensible as well as compassionate, as Haiti obviously is in no position to repatriate 100,000 returning migrants. But halting deportations is not enough, so we applaud the administration's decision Friday to grant temporary protected status to Haitians. They’ve held statewide forums, marched in Washington, D.C., and organized rallies with hopes of seeing the major immigration overhaul promised by Gov. Deval Patrick and President Barack Obama.

But after the historic election victory of Republican Scott Brown to the U.S. Senate, those illusions may be evaporating. Political observers say Brown, who ran on a platform opposing some of those reforms, has emboldened conservative voters, and they will likely table reforms in the near future.

In an Op-Ed published on his Web site, King said his idea would “level the playing field for law-abiding American employers and employees.” His plan is to “clarify” that wages and benefits paid to undocumented immigrants are not deductible for federal income tax purposes. He would also mandate use of “E-Verify,” an Internet-based system that allows an employer, using information reported on an employee’s Form I-9, to determine the eligibility of that employee to work in the United States. He would grant employers “safe harbor” if they discovered they had inadvertently hired someone illegally...

ATLANTA (AP) — When the Olympic Games came to Atlanta in 1996, a building boom transformed the landscape of downtown and brought with it an influx of Latino immigrants — both legal and illegal.

In the years since, the number of illegal immigrants living in Georgia has skyrocketed, more than doubling to 480,000 from January 2000 to January 2009, according to a new federal report. That gave Georgia the greatest percentage increase among the 10 states with the biggest illegal immigrant populations during those years. Many in metro Atlanta say the explanation for the boom is simple.

"It was because of jobs," said Kathy Brannon, who worked for the suburban city of Chamblee for nearly 30 years. "That's why people have come to this country since it started, for opportunity." ...

  112. Tough Bill Advances in Arizona on Illegal Immigrants

LOS ANGELES — The Arizona Legislature gave preliminary approval Tuesday to a proposal that would allow the police to arrest illegal immigrants on trespassing charges simply for being in the state.

The provision, which opponents and proponents call a first in the nation, is part of a wide-ranging bill whose sponsors say they hope will make life tougher for illegal immigrants.

The House bill must be reconciled with a version passed by the Senate, something that may be done within the next week or two. Both include measures to outlaw the hiring of day laborers off the street; prohibit anyone from knowingly transporting an illegal immigrant, even a relative, anywhere in the state; and compel local police to check the status of people they reasonably suspect are in the country illegally...

Arizona Law Promises to Be 'Toughest' on Illegal Immigration
Republicans Float Bill to Charge Illegal Immigrants with Trespassing -- in the State

    By RUSSELL GOLDMAN
    March 26, 2010

A bill empowering police to arrest illegal immigrants and charge them with trespassing for simply being in the state of Arizona, is likely just weeks away from becoming the toughest law of its kind anywhere in the countryAlready passed by the state's Senate and currently being reconciled with a similar version in the House, the bill would essentially criminalize the presence of the 460,000 illegal immigrants living in the state.

The measure allows police to detain people on the suspicion that they are illegal immigrants, outlaws citizens from employing day laborers, and makes it illegal for anyone to transport an illegal immigrant, even a family member, anywhere in the state.

The bill's supporters say a local crackdown has become a necessity because the federal government has failed to adequately seal the borders or actively enforce its laws. They blame Arizona's spiraling crime and unemployment rates on its large population of illegal immigrants...

Illegal Immigrant Suspected in Murder of Arizona Rancher

    By William La Jeunesse
    FOXNews.com

Robert Krentz was known among fellow ranchers as a good Samaritan who often helped injured illegal immigrants trying to cross the boiling desert border into Arizona. But the 58-year-old was gunned down while tending to his ranch Saturday morning, and police suspect an illegal immigrant was to blame.

Theft, robbery, vandalism and drug smuggling have always been part of illegal immigration in Cochise County, but murder is not something the cattle ranchers along the Arizona-Mexico border expected to happen to Robert Krentz.

Police say Krentz, whose family has been ranching in southern Arizona since 1907, was gunned down early Saturday morning by an illegal immigrant while out on his ATV tending to fences and water lines on the family's 34,000-acre cattle ranch.

Reached by phone early Tuesday at his family's ranch, Andy Krentz, Krentz's oldest son, said his father was a churchgoing man who routinely went out of his way to help those in need.

"My father was a very good family man," Krentz told FoxNews.com. "He supported his kids, supported his family. He went out of his way to help anybody we could without regarding to who they were. It didn't matter who they were."...

Robert Krentz killing stokes fears of rampant illegal immigration

Speculation that the murder of Arizona rancher Robert Krentz is tied to illegal immigration has sparked calls for Homeland Security to send in the National Guard.

By Daniel B. Wood, Staff writer / March 31, 2010

    Los Angeles

The killing of Arizona rancher Robert Krentz has prompted the state’s governor, its most influential senator, and its farming community to say that Washington is not doing enough to prevent illegal immigration and secure the border with Mexico.

Mr. Krentz was found Saturday, fatally shot and slumped over in his all-terrain vehicle, which still had its lights and engine on. Law enforcement officials tracked footprints from the scene back to the border, raising speculation that the killer is an illegal immigrant.

The apparent murder heightens the tension surrounding the immigration reform debate, with advocates of much stricter immigration controls saying Krentz's death highlights the urgent need for significantly increased border security.

Already, Krentz’s death is being held up as evidence that border violence is spiraling out of control as the Obama administration mulls immigration reform that could include a path to citizenship for some illegal immigrants in the United States...

    Pro-immigrant studies won't end debate
    By Thomas D. Elias

Professors at UCLA and USC released studies early this year that concluded allowing illegal immigrants to stay in America would provide a huge boost to the economy. But if anyone thought their findings might end one of this country's longest-running policy and moral debates, they were sadly mistaken.

That's because the battle over illegal immigrants, and the question of whether they should be permitted some path to eventual citizenship, actually heated up after those reports appeared. On one side, the studies' authors and others insist that legalizing the currently undocumented would produce wage increases, increase tax receipts at all levels of government, up the consumption of consumer goods and create jobs.

The other side says that is probably baloney, but even if it's true, it would still come at the expense of American citizen workers who desperately want and need at least some of the jobs now taken by illegals. What's constructive in all this is the perspective it lends to the longtime argument over how much illegal immigration costs state and local governments or whether the undocumented actually pay their own way via sales and gasoline taxes, property taxes (included in their rent payments) and other levies, including those on utility and telephone bills.

The anti-immigrant lobby argues that illegals cost California about $7 billion a year for services like public education and emergency medical care. But some studies say they pay in more than that in the obvious taxes - plus an unknown amount in state and federal income tax. Plus, since many use counterfeit Social Security cards to obtain jobs, another unknown amount is paid to that system for accounts that will never be drawn upon. Which means illegals are actually subsidizing Social Security...

Border security debate intensifies in Arizona

The murder of a prominent Arizona rancher has intensified an election-year debate about border security, with Republicans stepping up calls for National Guard deployments.

Facing a tough primary contest, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has been drawn into the fight, with his conservative opponent J.D. Hayworth accusing him of “28 years of inaction” on border security.

McCain wrote Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano this week, imploring her to fulfill his and GOP Gov. Jan Brewer’s standing request for federally funded guard troops. Texas GOP Gov. Rick Perry, meanwhile, wants unmanned drones to patrol the extended Texas border.

The governors are empowered to deploy the Guard, but they want the U.S. government to pay for it, which requires a presidential order.

Meanwhile, the murder of the rancher, Robert Krentz, 58, remains unsolved, with no proof that it is necessarily related to immigration or border issues susceptible to improvement by troops...

  118. I have first hand knowledge (I work for the agency responsible for deportation) that the federal gov is not doing enough to get rid of "criminal aliens". At the present time an illegal must commit some type of "crime" at the state level to be put into the deportation process. With the exception of visa violators, all aliens put into the system given due process. From the time they enter the system to the time they actually leave could be up to 6-7 months.

Due to jail time restrictions ICE is releasing numerous criminals daily. Some of these criminals range from simple DUI convitions to shop lifting. Many others have far worse crimes...forced sex with a minor, rape, assault with a deadly weapon...and the list goes on and on. THIS IS HAPPENING NOW.

One area of concern that the public does not know about is how the aliens actually get removed from the country.

Once they have used all avenues of appeal ICE is required to obtain a travel document from the local consulate. ICE must "request" travel back to the host nation. For some latino countries this is simple and free. For most of the other countries in the world..Jamaica, Cape Verde, Brazil, Nigeria, Liberia, UK, Canada and many others, their is a cost to have this travel document made. The range is between $40 to $250 dollars each. This price plus the cost of FEDEX overnight delivery to and from the Consulates adds up very quickly. Below is a quick breakdown of one person and the cost associated with him.

    45 days in custody prior to the acutal removal. $1,300 a day x 45 days= $58,500

Initial travel document request for Nigeria, sent via overnight FedEx. $12.00

Money order for the actual travel document assuming the consulate responds in a timely manner $45.

    Second FEDEX overnight $12

Plane ticket for actual deportation to the host country (Nigeria) $1,400 (on a good day).

Keep in mind that the consulates only issue this travel document for one day. If for some reason the alien can not (if he refuses) get on the plane then the gov eats half the cost of the plane ticket.

2 ICE officers plane tickets to escort him back to the country 2,300 each (round trip)

Hotel for overnight in the host country for two officers $500 total.

The total is just over $65,000. This is for one person to be deported assuming everything goes as planned. If the person is attempting Asylum then their time in custody is greatly increased.

I mentioned that the alien can "refuse" to get on a plane. Even with two ICE officers and an order from a Federal Immigration Judge, the alien can still refuse to get on the plane. With todays TSA guidlines, the ICE officers can not make the alien get on the plane. What happens is the gov eats half of all three tickets and the alien goes back to jail. From jail the process starts all over again. If the alien is a "Failure to Comply" then he will sit in jail until he does comply. This is all well and good but the tab for this alien only get bigger and bigger.

I have yet to mention any medical costs. These people get the same if not better medical care in jail as we do on the outside. All perscriptions are paid for as well as any testing. If the consulate knows that an alien has a specific problem....cancer let's say, then they often will not issue the travel document back to the country and ICE is forced to release them back into society...this goes for the rapist and child molester.

I would love some comments on this. Like I said before, THIS IS HAPPENING EVERYDAY.

Dramatic increase in Haitian immigrants trying to cross border from Canada

    Apr 5, 2010

(NECN: Anya Huneke, Swanton, VT) -

Ever since the January earthquake in Haiti, the border patrol in Vermont has seen a dramatic increase in Haitian immigrants trying to cross the border illegally from Canada.

Their motivation, agents say, is not the earthquake itself, but policies put into place after the earthquake.

Around the woods near the Highgate Springs, Vermont, port-of-entry, Border Patrol agents have been busy over the past two and a half months.

Since about a week after the devastating earthquake in Haiti - they've seen group after group of Haitians try to sneak across the U.S.-Canadian border.

Border Patrol traces the influx back to mid January, when the federal government established 'temporary protected status' for Haitians who were living in the U.S. illegally before the earthquake-- to protect them against deportation back to Haiti.

Of the 123 who have crossed illegally into this country along this wooded route or others like it, all but one were caught in Vermont, most likely, because Montréal is just to the north...

Clackamas jail pioneers system to identify illegal immigrants

    By Rick Bella, The Oregonian
    April 06, 2010, 6:54PM

OREGON CITY -- Federal immigration authorities activated a new information-sharing system this week at the Clackamas County Jail, making it easier for deputies to identify criminal suspects who are in the country illegally.

The system, developed by the U.S. departments of Justice and Homeland Security, uses fingerprints, photos and biographical information. It will be extended in coming months to other Oregon counties as part of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Secure Communities initiative.

Previously, fingerprints taken at the Clackamas County Jail were compared only against the system maintained by the FBI. Now fingerprints and other information can be simultaneously checked against Homeland Security records. In case of a match, the system immediately notifies immigration authorities, ensuring that criminal foreign nationals are not released back into the community.

Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts applauded the new system...

Many at the rally demanded that undocumented immigrants receive an immediate pathway to citizenship.

Readers respond to Arizona's strict new anti-illegal immigration law

    April 16, 2010 | 11:13 am

On Tuesday, Arizona lawmakers passed SB 1070, the toughest state anti-immigration act in the country.

The bill makes it a misdemeanor to lack proper immigration paperwork in Arizona.

More controversially, it also directs police to determine a person’s immigration status if they form a “reasonable suspicion” that someone is an illegal immigrant. Currently, officers can only inquire about immigration status if the person is a suspect in another crime.

Police are deeply divided on the matter, immigrant rights groups are horrified, and the bill's author, state Sen. Russell Pearce, said it simply "takes the handcuffs off of law enforcement and lets them do their job." Opponents say that although the bill prevents race from being the sole reason for a suspicion about legality, it implicitly allows it to be a factor.

After Times staff reported the story and a follow-up, almost 500 comments on both sides of the issue poured in. Here’s what you’ve had to say so far:...

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer Signs Tough Immigration Law

    Posted:
    04/23/10

Arizona's Republican Gov. Jan Brewer signed a controversial immigration bill into law on Friday, calling it "another step forward in protecting the state of Arizona."

The bill, SB 1070, came in response to a spike in violence along the state's portion of the U.S.- Mexico border. It will make it a state crime not to carry proof of legal immigration status and will require Arizona's state and local police to ask about a person's immigration status if there is "reasonable suspicion" that he or she is in the country illegally.

Opponents of the law, including Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), have said it amounts to "institutionalized discrimination and abuse," but Brewer defended her decision as her only choice considering the federal government's failure to secure the border.

Brewer also announced she will issue an executive order to develop training for officers to avoid civil rights violations...

PHOENIX – A proposed legal challenge to Arizona's new immigration law took a hit Monday when the Phoenix city attorney said Mayor Phil Gordon doesn't have the power to target the law without the support of the City Council.

Gordon was hoping to file a lawsuit to stop the law requiring local and state law enforcement officers to question people about their immigration status if there's reason to suspect they're in the country illegally.

After failing to gather enough support from City Council members, Gordon had claimed he could file a lawsuit without their approval.

But the legal opinion by City Attorney Gary Verburg said only the City Council has the power to authorize lawsuits.

    Northeastern president: Help undocumented students

Northeastern University President Joseph Aoun has endorsed a federal proposal that would allow undocumented college students a pathway to permanent residency and U.S. citizenship.

Aoun sent Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown a letter last week urging the passage of a bill known as the Dream Act, a proposal being considered in Congress. It would open an avenue to conditional permanent residency for students who are illegally in the country but want to go to college.

Brown spokeswoman Gail Gitcho said Brown would review the legislation if and when it comes before the Senate.

Last month, Tufts University President Lawrence Bacow sent Brown and Sen. John Kerry a similar letter. Harvard President Drew Faust wrote a similar letter last year to Kerry and the late Sen. Edward Kennedy.

Arizona border businesses lose key Mexican clients

By Tim Gaynor Tim Gaynor – Sun May 23, 8:03 am ET

NOGALES, Arizona (Reuters) – Adalberto Lopez' family-run musical instrument shop in the bustling Arizona border city of Nogales sells guitars and accordions to foot-stomping banda musicians and mariachis who cross up from Mexico to shop.

But in mid-May, the music stopped in the store. Mexican customers who account for almost all its sales stayed away as part of a two-day boycott to repudiate Arizona's tough new immigration law.

"The street and my shop were empty," said Lopez, of the "Day Without a Mexican" protest on May 14 and 15.

The law may make life more difficult for border retailers already hobbled by the recession and long border crossing waits, and Arizona's economy could take a hit from lost business.

But on a larger scale, experts believe the overall trade between the United States and Mexico, valued at around $1 billion a day, is unlikely to suffer from this latest wrinkle in the often strained U.S.-Mexico relations...

  136. I ran across this on the internet.

I do not know how real it is but the sentiment is shared by millions of American Citizens across the US.

    I hope you enjoy it.

    Dear Editor:

So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should tear down the Statue of Liberty because the people now in question aren't being treated
the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry.

Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr.Lujan why today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer. Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all area of Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented. Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground.

They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home.

They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture. Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity.

Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany, Italy, France and Japan. None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan.

They were defending the United States of America as one people. When we liberated France, no one in those villages were looking for the French-American or the German American or the Irish American . The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country's flag and waving it to represent who they were.

It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl.

And here we are with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. I'm sorry, that's not what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life.

I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those waving foreign country flags. And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty, it happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration bill. I wouldn't start talking about dismantling the United States just yet.

Troops to the Mexican border: Obama to send 1,200

By ERICA WERNER and JACQUES BILLEAUD, Associated Press Writers – 48 mins ago

WASHINGTON – Under pressure to take action, President Barack Obama is ordering 1,200 National Guard troops to boost security along the U.S.-Mexico border, officials said Tuesday, pre-empting Republican efforts to force a congressional vote to send the troops.

Obama will also request $500 million for border protection and law enforcement activities, according to lawmakers and administration officials.

The president's action comes as chances for comprehensive immigration reform, Obama's long-stated goal, look increasingly dim in this election year. Obama has been all but compelled to do something since Arizona's passage of a tough illegal-immigration law thrust the border problem into the public spotlight...

    BOSTON

The Massachusetts Senate on Thursday approved a tougher measure designed to clamp down on illegal immigrants' ability to obtain a range of state services from Medicaid to public housing.

The 28-10 vote came a day after the Senate passed a narrower proposal targeting illegal immigrants trying to get Medicaid and unemployment benefits.

The new measure -- which is included in a budget bill working its way through the Senate -- requires companies doing business with the state to verify that their workers are in the country legally and bars them from bidding on public contracts if they're caught employing illegal immigrants.

It also would subject those found to have used false identification to get a job with a state contractor to a 15-year jail term or $10,000 fine. Illegal immigrants seeking state-funded public housing also would be barred from receiving those benefits ahead of anyone who is in the country legally.

Senate Republican leader Richard Tisei of Wakefield, declared it a victory for Republicans, saying it incorporates measures GOP lawmakers have long advocated.

"This sends a very strong message," he said. "You shouldn't be here illegally if you want to access benefits."

Supporters of the wide-ranging proposal couldn't say how much the various measures would end up costing taxpayers. Some suggested it would save money, but others conceded that enforcing the new rules would cost the state.

Earlier this week, Senate President Therese Murray, a Plymouth Democrat, had dismissed the Republican proposal as "smoke and mirrors."

After the vote, Murray said she was bowing to the will of the Senate, even though she didn't agree with everything in the proposal.

"There are parts of it that I think are unfortunate, but the members wanted it," said Murray, who did not cast a vote.

Democratic Sen. Steve Baddour, who spoke in favor of the proposal, called it a bipartisan compromise.

Critics, including Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz, a Boston Democrat, faulted backers for rushing through the measure, which was unveiled Thursday minutes before senators debated and passed it.

"Shameful," Chang-Diaz said of the proposal after the vote.

    BOSTON Part2

In addition to restrictions on Medicaid, housing and unemployment benefits, the proposal would prevent the children of illegal immigrants from obtaining the same in-state tuition discount to public colleges and universities as legal Massachusetts residents. It also would bar illegal-immigrant students from getting taxpayer-funded education grants.

The tuition measure is a rebuke to Gov. Deval Patrick, who has pushed to allow those students to take advantage of the lower tuition rate, arguing that many of them were brought here by their parents as small children and have attended public schools.

An aide to Patrick said the governor will ensure any new efforts "are not duplicative, too costly and overly burdensome." He added that the governor continues to back in-state tuition rates for children of illegal immigrants.

"It is unfair that a small number of students that did not choose to come to Massachusetts and attended public schools continue to be ineligible to pay the same tuition as their classmates," said Press Secretary Juan Martinez.

A spokesman for House Speaker Robert DeLeo said the details of any final legislation will be worked out by a House and Senate conference committee.

The proposal establishes a toll free hot line to allow citizens to report to the state Attorney General's office suspected violations of the part of the amendment prohibiting the hiring of illegal immigrants by contractors working for the state.

It also authorizes the state attorney general to enter into a "memorandum of understanding" with the U.S. attorney general to work collaboratively to enforce the nation's immigration laws.

The state also would have to verify the immigration or citizen status of anyone arraigned in a criminal proceeding before a trial court in the state. The MassHealth program also would have to check participants' immigration status through the federal Homeland Security Department.

The Massachusetts House narrowly rejected a measure last month during their budget debate that also would have required those seeking to obtain state-funded public services to verify their status.

The Senate's action follows a poll released late Wednesday that found eight out of ten Massachusetts voters say proof of citizenship should be required for public benefits.

The Suffolk University/WHDH-TV survey released Wednesday found 84 percent of voters recommending Massachusetts lawmakers require people provide proof of citizenship to receive state benefits. Just 12 percent said no and 4 percent were undecided.
